A Linguistic Journey on Building a Parallel Corpus

This term we have looked at how to build a parallel corpus and on my Tepac project, I worked with Uğur Can İlhan. All the sources I used as referance on my project was based on science and technology and I was the one that used Phd theses that was written at the year of 2010. I got my hands on those theses since they all were published at tezyok.com as online. With Uğur Can, we created files that included pdf versions of those theses and added turkish and english summaries of all of them in order get a brief introduction on all of those theses. We had to make those summaries UTF8 to make them machine readable. Later on we sumed all those files up with a program named UAM CorpusTool3 and created jpg files that was summary of all of them and that was the end. It could be considered as a hard poject but not as a challenging one.

Writing...

Since i always wanted to be a writer, i like writing essays but not academic ones. They are boring and since those kind of essays are supposed be formal, i can't express my ideas about that topic directly but since i want to be a writer i need to be knowledgeable about all types of writings. Also i use many slang words when i speak and write because i learned most of the words i know from movies and books and it is impossible to use such words when writing an academic essay. But thankfully, i am good at filtering my words and i can handle it. But it doesn't change the fact that i don't like it and it is boring.

Ve işte bu yılın ilk döneminde canıma okuyan makale... Uygun bir şeyler yazabilmek için saatlerce kafa patlattığım ancak notlar verildiği zaman ancak 60-70 arasında notlar aldığım ve sonrasında öfkeden o kağıdı ağzıma tıkmamak için kendimi zor tuttuğum makale. Ama sonuç o kadar da kötü sayılmaz sanırım.

Humanity and World Peace

      For some people a world without violence is nothing but a wild dream. Everybody can see that there are many countries suffering from wars. In some of these places, main cause of the war is terrorism but outcome is always the same: Demolition. In every part of the world, it is possible to find someone who have ran away from that terror; however still there are babies dying because of bombs or children craving for a little piece of bread. This is what ruining hopes of people for a peaceful life. After spending all those years fighting with injustice, none of those people have enough energy to struggle anymore. On the other side, we can put an end to this injust situation. It is not too late to have happiness throughout the world and it will never be. These wars are caused by our mistakes and if we correct them, peace will be just a few steps away from us. It will absolutely be tough but if we try hard, there are many ways like decreasing number of weapons, treating people equally or making some improvements in countries.

      Firstly, without decreasing number of weapons, we cannot even dream of bringing peace to world. The main enemies of humanity that is taking our lives away are the weapons like guns, missles or bombs. There tons of weapons out there being used every day and when they are used, there are also people getting killed naturally. However, if the production of those arms were stopped and the money for them were used for good of humanity, everybody would potentially be living a totally different life. For example, there are many people in Turkey who are trying to live on minimum wage and it cannot be that easy to do that with just 1300 liras. However with disarmament, we can improve life conditions of those people, increase their monthly income and do many other improvements like building more schools or giving extra scholarships to students. In conclusion, disarmament can be a game changer, from losing many lives every day to creating a peaceful place for us and our children to live in.

       Secondly, we need to get rid of racism to attain world peace across the world. No matter what people say, I firmly believe that racist behaviors are the biggest enemies of humanity and world peace accordingly. Slavery is a good example to illustrate my point of wiev. Once, slavery was pretty common throughout the world and especially people with dark skin were used as slaves. They were being sold and they had no proper rights. In the end, the outcome was always slaughter of both sides as it happened at Gettysburg War in USA. In this world nobody is superior to another however some people judge others according to their skin colour or their religion. What those people do is not ethical at all and they should never be supported. After all, nothing can be rasonable enough to discriminate someone and we can not bring peace to world without disposing of our racist thoughts.

      Thirdly, when we use it for good deeds, developing technology can also be a good way for bringing peace to this world. Even now, we can see traces of technology in every part of our daily lives such as computers in our houses, our cell phones or even smart boards in our schools. They all are examples of technology being used for beneficial purposes and we should keep this up. For example, instead of making nuclear bombs, we should spend our time and energy on different aims like finding treatments for diseases which do not have a cure yet. There are many people suffering from cancer yet no one could find a proper treatment for it. All they do is selling useless but expensive medicines to poor people however if scientists had worked on finding a cure for cancer instead of creating all those crazy weapons, every single disease would be treated by now. Shortly, there is possibility of people being merrier with a handy usage of technology then why don’t we use it that way.

      In conclusion, I think we need things like disarmament, equality and ethical usage of high tech to attain world peace however we also need love for peace. We do not need guns, bombs or racism since they all are products of the lack of love we have for humanity. We all forgot how to love someone without getting a profit so we started to make all those weapons to fill the space in our hearts with hatred and our passion for getting money. We are the one who destroy the peace with with our endless desires and we also are the ones ignoring all the consequences. However we have bring an end to this and we should correct our wrongs. We need to find a way to stop deaths of all those innocent people. Otherwise, one day our or our beloved ones corpses will take  place of those dead bodies.

  Bu benim ilk bloğum olduğuna göre ilk olarak burada benim için ilk olan şeyleri paylaşmam gerekir diye düşündüm.

       İşte çizdiğim ilk yağlı boya tablo. En sevdiğim bu çiçeğin resmini çizerken her fırça darbesinin ellerimi deli gibi titrettiğini itiraf etmem gerekir. Ancak duyduğum tüm şüphelere rağmen ortaya bu kadar güzel bir eserin çıkması resme olan sevdamın daha da alevlenmesine yol açtı. Zaten o günden sonra bir daha da resmi bırakamadım. Bir resmi çizerken duyduğum ürkek his ancak resmin bitimine doğru birbiri ardına gelen fırça darbelerinin verdiği coşku ancak aşk kelimesiyle tabir edilebilir.

      Bunlar ise benim ilk kurukalem çalışmalarım. Bitirdikten sonra babamın çok beğendiği için aldığı, kitapsız geçen uzun günlerden sonra canıma tak ettiren can sıkıntısının eseri olan çalışmalar. Tıplı yağlı boya çalışmam gibi daha önce hiç böyle profesyonel sayılabilecek çalışmalar yapmamış olmanın verdiği endişeyle korku içinde başladığım ancak sonrasında yine büyük bir şevkle tamamladığım çalışmalar...
